Residents Give Cats And Dogs A Loving Home
The Rockaways showed its heart last Saturday when hundreds of residents showed up for “Adopt-a- Friend Day” – dog and cat adoptions held by the ASPCA and Bobbi & the Strays in partnership with Rockapup, an up and coming local pet store on Beach 116 Street. Residents from across the Rockaways – Arverne, Belle Harbor, Rockaway Beach, and Breezy Point, came together to show their support for these animals in distress. Even Rockaway’s police officers stopped by for a peek at the pets.
The result was astounding – 5 dogs and 5 cats found a new home in the Rockaways. For organizations like the ASPCA, ten adoptions is an uncommonly high number for a single day. “We usually get one or two adoptions per event,” says Jean, an event coordinator from Bobbi and the Strays, a NY Pet Rescue and Adoption group. “But the adoption rates and turn out here are honestly phenomenal. Rockaway residents are extending such a kind heart.” With hundreds gathering, the day also turned out to be quite the party – one resident was overheard saying, “This is like a street festival in Manhattan, right here on Beach 116!”
“This is one of the first times the ASPCA is coming to the Rockaways,” says Lisa Long, owner of Rockapup. “And it’s an important service for our community. A Rockaway resident used to have to travel a great distance to adopt any kind of pet. I think the ASPCA’s presence here is a sign of how much our area is taking off and growing. And over at Rockapup, we’re so excited to see so many different kinds of people responsive and engaged in the lives of these animals.”
The Animal Hospital of the Rockaways and Belle Harbor Animal Clinic also showed their support by offering free first-time exam vouchers for all adopted animals and Rockaway residents at Saturday’s event. In support of the two animal rescue groups, Rockaway residents donated hundreds to both nonprofits, while Rockapup donated $500 in free pet food. Rockapup has been hosting these events monthly and will continue to do so in the months to come.
