Ready Rockaway To Host Hurricane Planning Event
Ready Rockaway, a community based emergency preparedness organization, invites you to their National Emergency Preparedness Month event; Hurricane Irene – Then and Now.
Ready Rockaway will host the event in partnership with the Rockaway Youth Task Force, a youth organization which strives for social change in the Rockaways through youth leadership.
The guest speaker will be New York City Council member James Sanders Jr., but other elected officials, community leaders, local first responders, and community members are invited as well.
Ready Rockaway is a group of trained Emergency Preparedness professionals and community leaders in the Rockaway area, understanding the need to plan and galvanize their community for emergencies. They are getting Rockaway ready by sharing important information for effective emergency preparedness.
“We come together to study our hazard possibilities unique to Rockaway and calculate our resources already in the community and those having to come from outside the community,” said Executive Director Zandra Myers. “We pledge to work together to educate residents on what to do in various kinds of emergencies and we will bring the resources we need from outside the community to assist us so that we can best assist Rockaway.”
According to Myers, in order to prepare for an emergency, you must first know the hazards that you face. “Once you determine what you are up against, prepare a plan for surviving the disaster, test the plan, and have an emergency kit available with life-supporting items that are easily accessible or can be taken along if you must leave your home for an extended period of time,” said Myers.
At this year’s local National Emergency Preparedness event, each elected official will be given time on the program to speak briefly. This event will be held in our community at Knights of Columbus, 333 Beach 92 Street.
Those interested in attending should RSVP to 800-283-4818. Parking is available!
