Duo Busted In Neponsit Burglary Spree
A pair of Rockaway teens were arrested for allegedly stealing iPods from three cars in Neponsit early Monday morning, according to police.
The crime is believed to have taken place sometime around 4 a.m. along the normally quiet and deserted blocks of Neponsit where the two teens Daniel Fils, 17, and Justin Mann, 19, allegedly struck. Court papers claim the duo, who are believed to be cousins, ripped off three cars on Beach 140 Street, Beach 142 Street and Beach 144 Street, stealing a pair of iPod Shuffles, an iPod Touch and some loose quarters from a 2008 Hyundai, 2012 Honda and 2010 Mercedes.
Both teens are from Rockaway. Fils lives in Arverne and Mann is from Far Rockaway. Police arrested the pair and found the above mentioned property in Fils backpack and pocket along with a flashlight and tractor key, tools commonly used to break into cars and destroy locks, police said.
They have been charged in Queens Criminal Court with possession of burglar’s tools, petit larceny, unauthorized use of a vehicle and criminal possession of stolen property. Bail was set at $1,000 with another court hearing on Monday.
Police officials from the 100 Precinct are warning residents to secure their property, lock their car doors and windows. They are also urging anyone who witnesses suspicious activity in their neighborhood to call 911 immediately. Criminals will often randomly walk up and down a block simply tugging on car handles to see if anyone was foolish enough to leave their car open.
