Great Camp Finale, RAA Fundraiser
Commentary By Susan Hartenstein

Rockaway Artists Alliance is holding an ArtSPLASH Fundraiser to benefit RAA programming. The festive evening takes place Sunday, September 8 at 7 p.m. in sTudio 7 Gallery in the Rockaway

Center for the Arts in Fort Tilden. The evening will include some of our finest artwork, fine food, live music and entertainment featuring comedy by Sheba Mason, singer Gary Russo, dubbed ‘The 2nd Avenue Sinatra,’ accompanied by singer/musician Apryl Green. The $100 individual ticket price automatically enters you to win two round-trip tickets to anywhere JetBlue flies. You will also have an opportunity to win dozens of prizes, including dinner certificates, merchandise gift cards, spa and wellness packages.

Our organization thrives on the efforts of our members. The contributions raised on behalf of RAA provide critical support for the public programs that are central to our mission. In this uncertain economic time, we count on your support now more than ever.

KidsmART’s final show. KidsmART’s final show. In addition, our fundraiser is a night to thank our past board members, staff, educators, patrons of the arts and the many volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure an arts and cultural community is sustained in the Rockaways.

This year, we are proud to honor:

- Geoff Rawling - Former RAA president and an RAA founding member;

- Carolyn Cryan, LSW - RAA Educator of the Year; and

- John Daskalakis, Lead Park Ranger - NPS Park Partner of the Year.

A new exhibit at the Rockaway Artists Alliance’s sTudio 7 Gallery is on view through August 26. The opening reception is Sunday, August 18, 12-3 p.m. “Matt’s Show” presents the work of a very special artist. Matthew Petagna is 19 years old and lives with his father in Breezy Point. He has a very rare kidney disorder called Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus and at 10 was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. He graduated from Xaverian High School Ryken Program and currently attends Kingsborough Community College. He has taken Spanish, Italian and French at Kingsborough and is teaching himself Japanese at home. He is also an avid jogger and does 5K several times a week. He sings and plays the guitar every Thursday night at the RAA open mike. He writes and composes his own music. On Tuesday night and sometimes on Thursday mornings he paints in acrylics at RAA. He has painted on 24 x 36 canvases such ‘pop culture’ icons as the Simpsons, Spongebob, Family Guy, Cleveland, Bob’s Burgers characters and many more including music stars. All money from the sale of his artwork goes to the Children’s Hormone Foundation and The Bridge to Youth organizations. Come enjoy the talents of Rockaway’s own very special ‘outsider artist,’ Matthew Petagna.

The next RAA Writers meeting will be Monday, August 27 in sTudio 7 from 7- 9 p.m. Says Dan Guarino, “I will throw out a writing idea starter sometime this week. We had some nice pieces come from that at the last meeting. No obligations, but you might have fun with it.” RAA is calling for guest presenters at our monthly general meetings. Speakers, artists, performers, teachers, etc. to share/demonstrate/discuss topics of interest about art, nature, history, our coastal environment. If you are interested, or know someone who would be, please email Dan Guarino at: TWCGXWGL@aol.com, or Denis Macrae at: denisthe birdman@gmail.-com RAA CONTACT INFO:
