Are the residents of the Rockaway and residents of NYC aware of the alleged dangers of installing these pipelines to their health? How many of you know hydraulic fracking (drilling) of these pipelines are in danger of emitting unsafe levels of radon that may eventually cause cancer? Did you know the gas from your apartment stoves emit radon? The League of Women voters want you to be aware of these hazards. Tests have been made to assure that radon is not getting into our NYC water supply and into our environment through the drilling process of the pipelines. City officials have blocked the results of these tests. Before the fracking begins we must get together and call Governor Cuomo, Mayor Bloomberg and other State and City officials to halt the drilling of these pipelines until the test results are revealed. IT IS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH!
While we are alive and enjoying good NYC water, I walked into Kennedy’s Restaurant Sunday facing the view of the beautiful sunlight shinning on the beach and the boats in the bay and happy people around the bar swaying to the beat of the 24DAShow duet. It just picked up my spirits. I had a nice chat with Mike Heennahan (of course he was born in Ireland). He worked for TWA for 35 years and admitted to 92 years and didn’t look a day over 65. His wife, Elizabeth McCafrey Heennahan, was beside him who looked the same age. They wear the years well! Can no children be the result of that? The many, many nieces and nephews made up for that. They reside in Belle Harbor; their cousin is Msgr. Casey from Our Lady of Lourdes parish, and are very good friends of “Jerry” (Gerard Casey) who owns Kennedy’s. I spoke with Gerard later and told him he missed them earlier. I asked about his winning circle horse, “Lady on the Run.” “She didn’t run fast enough in Saratoga,” he said with some disappointment in his voice. Well you can’t win ‘em all!
I do want to welcome the new chef at Kennedy’s, Donney Chestnut from the famous Katz’s Deli on 2nd Avenue, NYC. My ride home came too early to sample your fare...next time. I also learned from Tom Holmes, that Eddy Ruoff celebrated his 85th birthday on May 26. Happy belated birthday to you Eddy. 1927 was a good year! It brought me into the world that Christmas to make me the same age you are. It is great to still be here. Speaking of birthdays, Patricia Crowley celebrated another 21+ birthday on July 19 and she met me for drinks and a bite at Kennedy’s to celebrate. She looks fantastic! Her husband Bobby (my cousin) better watch out someone doesn’t steal her away. Bobby Crowley’s mom, Gladys Crowley, is celebrating her 65+ birthday August 16. Happiness and good health to you for many years to come.
Saturday, 9 a.m., August 18, will be the kick off for the paddle board contest on the ocean at Breezy Point. If you don’t have a paddle board, you can pick one up at the Breezy Point Surf Shop. Owner, Donald will be there, if not, his most gracious sales lady Eileen will be more than happy to take care of you. They are open seven days a week and paddle boards and surf boards are on sale at very low prices. Hurry and get them and join the fun! Around town in NYC: The Dream Hotel at 355 West 16 Street in the middle of the meat market had a blast of a party for their 2nd anniversary. On the lawn of Gracie Mansion Mayor Bloomberg spoke of the 50th anniversary of Harlem Week. Clips of Porgy and Bess were performed live on stage. Aren’t we so proud of our Oympians? What a great job they did. Not only the men but the women outdid themselves. Cheers! Cheers! Cheers!
