Jamaica Bay Slaughter

Dear Editor,

In the early morning of July 9, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge became a killing field – its sanctity changed forever. United States Department of Agriculture-Wildlife Services agents rounded up, stuffed into crates, and hauled away 711 Canada Geese with their goslings to an upstate New York poultry processing facility, to be gassed to death by carbon dioxide suffocation, or slaughtered – in the name of air travel safety at the behest of NY Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

The “refuge,” one of the few Federal protected areas in NYC for wildlife, and a world renowned bird sanctuary – free from human molestation – is now open season for further “culls” (another name for hunting), not only to kill off more resident geese, but also six other species of “target birds” on the UDSA’s hit list of bird hazard risks (the beautiful Mute Swan is one Killing). This is not science. This ongoing extermination campaign for the last four years of a majestic bird is the end result of decisions made by elected officials – without public input – based on political expediency and cost effectiveness, instead of sound science and an ethic of promotion of Life.

The incidence of airplane bird strikes will be reduced significantly – though never completely – only by habitat modification together with new aviation technology – not by a rogue government agency’s lunatic plan (taxpayer funded) of the extermination of animals whose only crime was to be born to fly.
