Free Shakespeare In Rockaway This Weekend

This coming weekend, Rockaway will host two free, outdoor performances of William Shakespeare’s plays, as Hip to Hip Theatre Company of Sunnyside brings its popular Queens Shakespeare in the Park to the peninsula for the first time. The company is performing the sidesplitting farce, “The Comedy of Errors,” and the world’s most famous revenge tragedy, “Hamlet,” throughout ten Queens’ parks from July 25 to August 18.

Hip to Hip is under the artistic direction of Jason Marr, who noted that the company has performed in the parks of Queens for the past six years, and added, “We hope to continue promoting and celebrating all of our borough’s parks, including Rockaway’s, for years to come.” Hip to Hip thrives in the open-air setting in which Shakespeare’s plays were originally performed, and is inspired by the legacy of Joseph Papp, who spent his life fighting to keep Shakespeare free for all. Marr added, “Our mission is to reach as many underserved communities in Queens as possible.”

These family-friendly productions are for lovers of Shakespeare and for those experiencing Shakespeare for the first time. All performances are free and open to the public. Bring blankets, low chairs and picnic fare. No lines. No tickets. Seating is first come, first served. Local performance details:

“The Comedy of Errors,” Jacob Riis Park Bathhouse, Saturday, July 28, 7 p.m. (runtime 90 minutes)

What happens when two sets of identical twins, separated from birth, unknowingly end up in the same place, at the same time? A sidesplitting farce that is double the laughter and twice the fun.

“Hamlet,” O’Donohue Park, Beach 17 Street, Far Rockaway, Sunday, July 29, 7 p.m. (runtime 105 minutes)

Shakespeare’s greatest revenge tragedy follows a young prince haunted by his murdered father’s ghost and driven to the edge of madness as he grapples to answer the question: to be King, or not to be King.

The acting company is headlined by Joel Leffert (Broadway: Not About Nightingales) and Jason Marr (Television: Law & Order: SVU, As the World Turns) and includes Elisabeth Ahrens, Cody Boccia, Liz Daingerfield, Evangelia Kingsley, Kurt Kingsley, Joy Marr, Devin Nelson, Nancy Nichols, Alex Teicheira and Guy Ventoliere.
