Hot Rock Express Sweeps Double Header
The Rockaway Express opened their summer season in the NY Travel Baseball Club National division by defeating the Brooklyn Bulldogs 14-3 and 10-2 last Sunday at Fort Tilden. They were led by Christian Agoglia who had 3 hits including a triple, 4 runs and 3 RBIs during the two games.
The Express started the scoring on their first at bat of the morning as Ian Byrne led off with a single and Daniel Green followed with a walk. Billy Reyes legged out an infield hit to score Byrne and James Tuohey’s grounder to the right side scored Green. Joe Tammaro followed that with a walk and was driven in by James Agoglia’s sharp single to center. Agoglia moved all the way around to score on steals. Kieran Conaghan’s bid for an extra base was snagged by the third baseman and thrown out by a step.
The Express scored twice more in the second as Christian Agoglia collected his first hit and RBI by driving a single to center knocking in Matty McDonagh who had singled in front of him. Agoglia alertly moved around the bases on steals to score the second run of the inning.
Meanwhile starting pitcher Mike McManus held the Bulldogs in check over the first three innings, limiting them to two runs on two hits while striking out five. The Express defense set the tone in the bottom of the first. After the leadoff Bulldog batter walked, he was running on the pitch with second baseman Daniel Green moving to cover the base. The batter hit a grounder into the vacated second base hole. Green recovered and quickly reversed to stop the ball from going through, and with the lead runner rounding second for third, threw a strike to third baseman James Agoglia who applied the tag for the out.
McManus was relieved in the fourth by James Tuohey, who gave up just one run on no hits and struck out three. The Express scored 7 more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to put the game out of reach. McManus’ finished the scoring by singling to right center and coming home on Billy Reyes’ RBI single.
The second game was a struggle in the early innings. Starting pitcher Joe Tammaro shut out the Bulldogs over the first two innings while the Express scored single runs in the first and second. Christian Agoglia scored the first run when he walked and came home on McManus’ RBI grounder. Green scored the next run when he raced home from second base on Ian Byrne’s grounder to deep short. The Bulldogs fought back with two runs in the third to tie the game.
The Express took the lead for good in the bottom of the third when Christian Agoglia smacked a single to center scoring Brendan Watters and McDonagh. He was driven in by Terence Marten who lashed a vicious line drive triple to left center. Tammaro followed with a line single to right to score Marten. Billy Reyes came in to pitch the fourth and fifth innings and he held the Bulldogs scoreless while striking out five batters.
The Express scored once more in the fourth and three times in the fifth. Christian Agoglia capped his fine day by leading off the bottom of the fifth with a rocket triple to center. He then scored on McManus’ single to right who then scored on Joe Featherston’s single to center.
Featherston tagged up from third and scored on Tuohey’s sacrifice fly to center for the final run. Daniel Green closed out the sixth for the Express win.
