HeatWave Opens Up St. Francis Summer Classic

The 28th edition of the St. Francis Summer Classic is now underway. The Second Grade division tipped off on Wednesday, June 27 under the direction of Phil Hughes.

The Men’s Open began with a flurry on Monday, June 18. Kenny Whelan and his son Ryan are once again at the reins. Bryanne Flaherty leads the Women’s Open division which started Monday, July 9. Peter Tuffey, Marty McManus and Ray Marten take the helm for the Boys Grammar Junior. They began on Tuesday, June 26. They alternate days at 5:45 p.m. with the Girls Grammar Junior division that began on Wednesday, June 27. Randy Neiswenter once again guides the pack.

John Blum directs the Girls Grammar Senior division that kicked off on Monday, July 2. Also beginning on July 2 was the Boys Grammar Senior division led by St. Francis Summer Classic Director Keith Goldberg. John Moran launched the Boys Grammar Middle division on Tuesday, July 26.

Also beginning on that date was the Boys High School division with Dan Edwards, Tommy Morgan and Joe Kenel presiding. The Girls High School division is targeting a late July start.

In reality, the Summer Classic has been underway for quite a while now with the venerable Graybeards past their midway point and beginning playoffs. Commissioner Larry McGuire once again is the ringmaster.

Uniforms, schedules, rules, and applications for the Graybeards Family Run will be distributed at the first few games, so please arrive early to allow for these tasks to be taken care of.

The Concession stand will be open with drinks, ice cream, hot dogs, and snacks.

The Classic asks once again that you are mindful and respectful of our neighbors. For most people, there is no reason to drive to the schoolyard. Please walk or ride a bike.

If you do drive, do not double park, do not block driveways, hydrants or the entrance to the schoolyard, and remember, the beach blocks are fire zones with no parking. We look forward to another great year.

Let’s play ball and have fun!
