Rockaway Waterfront Alliance Kids Meet Up On Jamaica Bay

Indo Caribbean Alliance and RWA students. Indo Caribbean Alliance and RWA students. Last week students from Rockaway Waterfront Alliance met up with other youth who are members of the Indo Caribbean Alliance to share their knowledge of Jamaica Bay. RWA students who have spent the past year exploring the bay by kayak, paired up with Indo Caribbean Alliance (ICA) members to show them Dubos Point and paddle out of Sommerville Basin together. Most of the ICA members live in Ozone Park, but it was the first time many of them had ever been to Jamaica Bay or had the chance to kayak.

Later in the day, students all took part in a shoreline cleanup at Dubos Point as well as net seining together to see what fish and marine life they could catch in their net. The activities opened up a dialogue between students that helped to bridge two communities both affected by environmental justice issues. for local youth to work together and a terrific kick-off for the summer season.
