CBB Barrier Installation Underway
The installation of the pedestrian guard rail project funded by Councilmember Eric Ulrich has finally begun along Cross Bay Boulevard. The barrier is planned for the section of roadway going through Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge between Broad Channel and the Joseph P. Addabbo Bridge. According to the project’s plans, the rails will extend from the bridge to East 1 Road in Broad Channel.
The guard rails are meant to improve pedestrian safety for those who frequent the walking and biking path. Strong requests by the community were made after a woman and her dog were killed walking through the wildlife refuge in 2009 as a car spun out of control and flipped onto the sidewalk. Early last year, DOT narrowed the corridor from three lanes to two in hopes of reduce speeding. Accidents, however, continue in the area despite the change in regulations.
