Playland,” a computer manipulated photographic commentary of sorts, by Jessica Schulman. Among the artworks in RAA’s “5 Boros,” now on view in Fort Tilden. The RAA “Salon Show,” a non-juried exhibition of member works, and “5 Boros,” exploring some of the most interesting spots and spaces around NYC are on exhibit in sTudio 7 Gallery, RoCA at Fort Tilden and both are on view through August 5 in sTudio 7. Admission is free to all exhibits. Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday, 12-4 p.m. and by appointment.

RAA is privileged to have been chosen to host an exhibit of historical photographs celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Marine Parkway/Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, just ‘down the road’ from the galleries of RAA in Fort Tilden.

The exhibit was organized by Mary Hedge, Archivist of MTA Bridges and Tunnels. The show includes photographs documenting the construction of the bridge from 1936 to 1937 (the bridge opened on July 3, 1937), planning documents, documentation of the dimensions of the bridge which were required by the War Department (what is today the Department of Defense), and correspondence between the controversial Robert Moses and the various agencies and individuals involved such as the Rockaway Civic Council and the Brooklyn Borough President’s Office. Hedge has arranged these letters, she says, as a kind of dialogue between the parties. The exhibit, on view through August 5, is housed in the sTudio 7 Gallery, where visitors can also see the “Salon Show” and “5 Boros.” Admission is free for all three exhibits. Come learn about and see the birth of an essential part of the life of Rockaway, while satisfying your appetite for the beauty of art. A duplicate exhibit commemorating the Marine Parkway/Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge can be seen at the Seaside branch of the Queens Public Library through the end of the month.

Word from Vivian Rattay Carter is that this summer Shakespeare comes to Rockaway for two free outdoor performances. “The Comedy of Errors,” a comedy by the Great Bard, will be presented at the Jacob Riis Bath House on Saturday, July 28 at 7 p.m.; “Hamlet” will be presented in O’Donohue Park, on Beach 17 Street in Far Rockaway, on Sunday, July 29 at 7 p.m. The plays are produced by the Hip to Hip Theatre Company of Sunnyside, Queens, which has been performing in the parks of our borough for the last six years. Carter suggests you bring family, friends and a picnic basket. Sounds Kool and Kultural.

ArtSPLASH is RAA’s largest exhibition of the year, filling the spaces of sTudio 6 and sTudio 7 Galleries, and the indoor and outdoor stages of RAA. The annual showcase for the visual, literary and performing arts attracts a wide range of mediums, styles and imaginations. Artists are free to explore any theme and all genres in this juried show.

ArtSPLASH 2012 is open to all media, including but not limited to painting, photography, watercolor, stained glass, film and video, artisan crafts, sculpture, the literary arts, cartoon, assemblage. Deadline for receipt of entries: August 10, 2012; Exhibit dates: September 8-October 7, 2012. For full prospectus and entry form, go to the RAA website www.rockaway artistsalliance.org
