Wow! What a great summer in Rockaway! It’s so great to see the comeback of our beaches and neighborhood. What a pleasure it has been to be on the beach with my children feeling they are safe in the water under the watchful eye of the lifeguards. I live on 127th Street and my neighbors and I cannot stop praising the attentive lifeguards on our beaches. The fourth of July in particular really stood out. On a very crowded and hot day the lifeguard presence was everywhere.
Although we were on the shoreline so were the lifeguards. In fact, one lifeguard got in the water to monitor the depth and keep a large group of kids in check. They were cheerful and friendly with everyone. They built respect and rapport with parents and children that will carry out through the entire summer. The NYPD and the 100 Precinct should take some advice from these lifeguards.
How about stepping out of your air conditioned cars on our boardwalks and letting the kids take a look at your friendly faces. Instead we have to dodge your cars as we take our evening and early morning bike rides on the boardwalk (our safe haven from cars?!). Unfortunately, the only exposure that my three young children have had to police officers outside their vehicle was witnessing a half hour long random search of a small group of respectful teens on the 121st Street beach. Why not take out those bicycles the city purchased and show our kids healthy alternatives to motor vehicles on the boardwalk? Let’s build the same respect and rapport with the members of our community as lifeguards are doing! Looking forward to more to come from our outstanding community in Rockaway.
