Local Band Hosts Album Release Show

By Keisha Frazier

On July 7 at First Congregational Church hall on Beach 94 Street, the band Kinship held what many referred to as the hottest concert of the year – pun intended. Despite the 98-degree weather, nearly 200 people ditched the beach to attend the band’s debut album release concert this past weekend.

Each person who came out to support the band received a copy of the selftitled album; one that the group had worked on for several years, among changes in both sound and band members.

“The style of Kinship has become more eclectic with three members composing songs based on their own musical experiences,” said singer and keyboardist Katherine Navarro Patrylo. “Combined, [the songs] provide the listener with a wider range of exciting contemporary Christian music.”

In addition to Patrylo, the band mates include Jackie Vazquez, Jonathan Navarro, John Shinnick and Trevor Benjamin. Saturday’s concert featured an opening act from Jay Cabassa and his wife Sarah, both friends of the band. Kinship followed up by giving the community a taste of some of the tracks featured on the album.

“Having this event in Rockaway was very important to me because I was born and raised in Rockaway,” said drummer Trevor Benjamin, who said he desires to use the band’s music to show God’s love.

That night, Kinship also raised awareness of the mission’s upcoming trip of Raquel Pinto, a Kinship fan and lifelong member of the Rockaway community. Concert attendees had the opportunity to participate in a raffle fundraiser for the 23-year-old who will be participating in the World Race this September. Pinto will be visiting 11 countries in 11 months to aid impoverished nations across the globe.

“There are not enough words to express how grateful I am for everyone’s support,” Pinto said. “My prayer is that God will pour out his love into me so that it overflows onto all those that I will encounter.”

Kinship is now planning their summer 2012 tour to promote the release of their album. Although tour locations will range from venues within the five boroughs to locations in New Jersey, they continue to practice weekly at House on the Rock church at 114-15 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. House on the Rock, where Jon Navarro and Katherine Navarro Patrylo attend, is one of the band’s local sponsors.
