FR Resident Wins A Celeb Makeover

By Ana Solares

Sarah Zelmanowitz of Far Rockaway. Sarah Zelmanowitz of Far Rockaway. Raffles, sweepstakes and contests are the toys of probability where the odds of striking out are often mightier than winning. That’s exactly what working mom Sarah Zelmanowitz of Far Rockaway felt when she entered an online contest sponsored by Honda.

In remarkable and unlikely fashion, however, the odds spun in her favor when she received notification that she had won the Honda “Leap Onto the A-List” contest. The lucky mom had won her very own “Celeb Experience,” which included limo service to and from New York City, an “A-List” celebrity-type makeover and VIP photo shoot.

Once in New York City, Zelmanowitz was pampered with two new makeovers, a “daytime chic” look and a “nighttime glam” look. For her daytime look the young mother of two was dressed in a fitted denim jacket, floral print skirt, with gold accessories to match. The evening outfit was a white blazer and a sequined dress, with a smoky eye as makeup to complete the look.

The stylist that dressed Zelmanowitz has worked with celebrities including Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and rock legend Bon Jovi.

“It was really fun. I took my sister-in-law with me and got to take a picture, too,” she continued. “There was like a room of 15 people there just for me, one makeup and hair lady, a stylist, two photographers.”

Zelmanowitz says she found out about the contest through an e-mail which asked individuals nationwide to make a ‘Leap List’ – a list of things they wanted to do before they made a change in their lives.

Given a list of prizes, including riding a limo for a day, Zelmanowitz elected to ‘star in her own photo shoot’ as her ‘leap’ aspiration.

“I got an e-mail saying ‘Congratulations!’ and I thought it was spam,” Zelmanowitz told The Wave, smiling at the recollection. “I told my friends, family, and parents. My parents were a little skeptical about the whole thing; they were like, ‘what? a limo is coming to pick you up and take you to the city?’ ”

Throughout the almost eight-hour photo shoot, according to Zelmanowitz, the makeover team willingly saw to her every need. As for her souvenir of the day, Zelmanowitz was offered her choice of one of the two looks.

“I got to keep the glam look. In total, I think the outfit was about $350 to $400,” she said. “I also asked them where they got the shoes, I really liked them. I bought them after the shoot.”

For the busy mom, the makeover was all a “once in a lifetime opportunity.”

“People at work call me rock star,” joked Zelmanowitz, adding that many have told her to try her luck at the lottery.

When asked if she believed in luck, Zelmanowitz said, “I guess so, but I think the only way to win it is if you’re in it.”
