Ocean Village Shooting Reprisal For Gang Hit
Independence Day was not a day of celebration for a 23-year-old Rockaway man, who was shot once in the back of his right shoulder outside the Ocean Village complex, police say.
The unidentified victim was shot at about 1:30 a.m. on July 4 while he was standing at Beach 57 Street, just off Edgemere Avenue.
Police say that the gunshot wound is not life-threatening and the victim was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Sources say that the victim was not cooperative with police, and locals believe that the shooting was in retaliation for the shooting death of a Hammmels man in front a bodega at 86-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard on June 27. Police say that a war between two local gangs, The Gang of Apes and the 40 Boyz has caused the number of gun-related incidents to skyrocket in recent weeks.
A suspect in this shooing was reportedly arrested later in the day on July 4, but police have not yet released his name to the press.
