In Honor Of Millie Schulman

Dear Editor,

It is wonderful to see businesses opening up on our boardwalk, more visitors visiting our beaches but what a shame it is to see our boardwalk still in disrepair. Remember the beautiful lighthouse that once greeted residents and visitors alike on Beach 94 Street. What happened to it? Recently I noticed our mosaic whale has a huge whole in it’s head. The trash that visitors leave behind is disgusting and quite frankly unsanitary. Down in Arverne

By the Sea, I witnessed a mother letting her child do number 2 in between two parked cars. She told me she would clean it up. However, it is a little of our own fault. We have not demanded more bathroom facilities as more beaches have opened up by our Parks Department. I wonder if the Department of Health goes after our city agencies as much as it goes after our small businesses? With such unkept grounds the sign “Welcome to Rockaway Beach” really rings Welcome to Rockaway Dump, literally. The main reason why boards on the boardwalk are shaky and coming apart is because of heavy vehicles that are on top of them. How many times even during the winter months, have I witnessed an authorized vehicle cruising down our boardwalk? More than a handful. I wish these Park Officers in green uniforms or as I like to call them “Greenies,” would pay more attention to trash being left behind rather than to a local kid on a boogie board.

My Wish List for Rockaway, in honor of Millie Schulman continues...1) A 3000 seat musical amphitheater on the beach down in the Beach 40’s, with ample parking, facilities and vendors, The Rockaway Artists Alliance could even call it HOME for they would have offices and studios there. Alongside this theater, would be nature trail parks for biking, cross country and maybe a saltwater pool/ spa. 2) A boardwalk along the beautiful Jamaica Bay area with ample parking and cutting boards for fishing. 3) The toll bridges would be taken over by our community instead of the tapeworm MTA, much how the Atlantic Beach toll bridge is run. These are my top three wishes and I know they were Mrs. Schulman’s. Millie work your powers up there or as she once said at Peninsula Library to me many years ago “Patrick, maybe Rockaway should just secede from the city?”
