By Nicholas Briano

The Wounded Warriors arrive down Rockaway Beach Boulevard last year. The Wounded Warriors arrive down Rockaway Beach Boulevard last year. The warriors are coming to Rockaway next week.

The Wounded Warrior Project will arrive in Rockaway on Thursday, July 12, for a long weekend of festivities and water sports, as the residents of Rockaway open their doors and their hearts to wounded soldiers from all over the nation.

On Thursday the soldiers are treated to a grand welcoming entrance to Rockaway at 6 p.m. with a red, white and blue-lined parade along Rockaway Beach Boulevard that runs through Roxbury, Neponsit and Belle Harbor to Beach 126 Street, after which the soldiers and their host families are treated to a welcoming reception at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club.

On Friday the soldiers go fishing on a charter boat while their wives are treated to a day at Strands Salon. The day culminates with an evening dinner cruise around Manhattan. The following day the soldiers enjoy a full day of adaptive water sports including surfing. The evening ends with a Special Olympics fundraiser on Beach 134 Street at the home of Flip and Rita Mullen where the Wounded Warriors are invited as specials guests. Admission is a donation of $35 for adults and $5 for children.

Sunday is the final day the soldiers are in Rockaway. They will celebrate mass at the Breezy Point 9/11 Memorial site followed by a meet and greet with the soldiers. For more information on how to get involved, host a family, or donate to the weekend’s festivities call Flip Mullen at 718-945-4593 or Mary Ellen Olsen at 917-603-8008.
