The Inner Voice

Commentary by Marilyn Gelfand

Sometimes when we feel good inside we can be magnanimous in every way. On the other hand, when we may feel stressed or irritable, it comes out in all directions and at everyone who crosses our paths. We may feel so bad that we yelled at the wrong person, but did it anyway. The idea is to create a real inner peace and then let it spill out everywhere.

How can we create that inner peace? First, we can take control over our own things, issues and relationships. We can make ourselves happy. We can create a space between ourselves and others and give those we care for the chance to do things their own way. Most important is how to feel safe and secure. Things like money, jobs, relationships, beauty are transitory and are not controllable. Often we get temporary happiness from these. But life changes, the economy, time and health all play a role. If we have trust in a higher power who can provide answers through mediation to our questions, we can relax more into the safety of living life in the unknown. We try to remain in the present moment with the trust that what we need to know will be revealed at the appropriate moment. We just keep walking straight ahead taking one small step after another. We are flexible so we can handle what we can’t control.

As more and more peace fills us, we can take those deep breaths and feel gratitude for what we have. We can even start radiating peace. This peace can be felt by others who may enjoy being in our presence. We let go of what is yet to come, and just feel safe enough to let go of our expectations. It can be a genuine happiness to just feel at peace wherever we are and with whomever we are. Taking nice deep breaths and enjoying our beautiful beach goes a long way to increase our feelings of peace,
