Sunset In The Park Ends On Criminal Note
While hundreds enjoyed the “Sunset in the Park” fundraiser at Tribute Park on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 116 Street last Saturday night, at least one person in the large crowd was not there to honor those who died on September 11, 2001 or even to enjoy the food and music.
That still-unidentified person was up to no good, a Friends of Tribute Park spokesperson says.
“On Saturday, June 23, we held our annual ‘Sunset In the Park’ event,” that spokesperson says. “It was a beautiful evening with several hundred supporters in attendance. Unfortunately, the evening ended on a disappointing note. The cash and checks collected at the gate were stolen.” “One minute the money was there and the next it was gone,” the spokesperson said, adding that the police are involved in the investigation into the missing funds.
“We cannot understand why anyone would want to steal monies that were donated to preserve the memories of our fallen heroes of September 11,” she adds. “Despite this disappointing incident, we will persevere and will not let this incident deter us from our mission of maintaining Tribute Park. We wholeheartedly appreciate and thank all those who support the park.”
Detectives from the 100 Precinct are investigating. Anybody with information about the robbery or who saw anybody suspicious at the park that night is urged to contact the 100 Precinct Detective Unit at 718-318-4223.
