Bust 50 Gang-Bangers At Ocean Bay

By Howard Schwach

Police say that the drug trade centered on the Ocean Bay Houses in Rockaway. Police say that the drug trade centered on the Ocean Bay Houses in Rockaway. More than $30,000 in illegal drugs and eight weapons were taken in police raids at the Ocean Bay Houses in Rockaway and more than 50 reputed gang members were arrested since October, police sources say.

According to citywide sources, the youngest gang-banger arrested in the take-downs was a 16- year-old unidentified member of the Crips, whose job it was to move weapons from one hiding place to another in the sprawling public housing complex.

“The gangs use young kids to move guns because, if they are caught, there are far fewer consequences for them than for an adult who is caught with a weapon,” a police source explained.

Of the 56 arrested, police say, 30 of them are known Bloods and Crips gang members.

Sources say that wiretaps show that gangs were in the process of “restructuring,” and that there is some possibility that the gangs have foresworn warfare and are not working together in the drug trade.

The drugs taken from the complex under court warrants included crack cocaine, heroin, cocaine, Percocet and Xanax, police sources say.
