Dear Editor,

I was retired (involuntarily) from the U.S. Army National Guard and Army Reserve after some 30+ years of service in 2001. During all that time, I heard our nation’s colors called lots of things: “Old Glory”, “the Red, White, and Blue”, the “Stars and Stripes”, the “American Flag”, our nation’s colors, the national standard... but never before have I heard it referred to as an abomination.

Perhaps our neighbor was only referring to the flag pole (I hope), and not the flag. Even so, I fail to see how any flagpole, which so gracefully and gloriously lifts up, and allows “The Star- Spangled Banner” to fly so freely and beautifully in the air above our beachfront, can be considered an abomination. It obstructs the view? No, it ALLOWS the beautiful view of “Old Glory” streaming in the ocean breeze, and such a view should stir one’s heart with pride and love of country. I, for one, am glad that patriotism is not waning in the Rockaways.
