101 Pct Frustration

Dear Editor,

After living in Rockaway for 21+ years and taking advantage of the wonderful year round recreational activities available here, I am sorry to say that an experience I had this past Friday evening with detectives from the 101st Precinct has me concerned.

I left a friend’s house near Beach 20 Street around 10:30 p.m. and began walking on the boardwalk to my home as I have done numerous times. Several other people were walking on the boardwalk at the time. When I left the boardwalk at Beach 25 Street, two detectives stopped me, asked me for identification which I provided, and issued me a summons for “being in a park after dark”. When did the Rockaway boardwalk get defined as a “Park”? If the 101st Precinct plans to continue giving summonses for being on the boardwalk after dark, then the boardwalk closing hours should clearly be marked on signs. I phoned 311 and was informed that they are not aware of any closing times for the Rockaway boardwalk.

I am frustrated with the experience and am seriously considering moving with my family to another beach community, perhaps Long Beach, where their residents are still treated with the respect that Rockaway residents once experienced.

Sounds strange...Please reach out to the Commanding Officer, Capt. Kevin Maloney @ 718.868.3400 or myself, Denean Ferguson, Vice-President of the 101 PCT Community Council @ 646.552.8453. We hope to alleviate your frustration!

A close friend from out of

A close friend from out of town is visiting NYC over next week and on July 4th, I planned to take her around NYC and planned to end the day in the community that I work in with a late night stroll on the Rockaway Boardwalk in the area where the Rockaway Taco people have their new concession stands and live entertainment (the 90's). After reading Mr. Butler's letter a few moments ago, however, I called 311 and I was assured that the Rockaway Boardwalk does not close and it was legal to walk the boardwalk 24 hours, day and night. Given Mr. Butler's Summons experience, however, I've sadly change my plans. We wont be anywhere near Rockaway the night of July 4th!
