CB 14 Beach Meeting Set For June 25
A meeting of Community Board 14’s Parks Committee has been set for June 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Beach 90 Street, but beach advocates claim that the board is trying to keep the meeting a secret.
“There is a philosophical difference between the beach advocates and the community board,” said John Cori, the president of the Friends of Rockaway Beach. “We think that Rockaway should be pro-active, telling the Parks Department what we want for our beaches, while the community board wants us to be reactive, listening to what the Parks Department wants to do on our beaches and then saying yes or no.”
Cori added that the head of the committee, Broad Channel resident John McBride, lives about as far as a community board member can live from the beach and doesn’t understand the problems.
He charges that McBride and the board want to keep this meeting a secret so that the city agency can simply give a presentation about what they are going to do and then leave.
“It’s our beach, not theirs, and we have aright to talk to them about sand replenishment, about fishing and surfing, about beach hours and boardwalk use,” he says.
CB 14 officials say, however, that there is nothing secret about the meetings, that they are posted on the board’s website and notifications go out to all concerned members of the community and others.
