Flagpole Almost Gone

Dear Editor,

Last week I was looking down at the water from my porch and to my surprise, there was a new flagpole at the entrance to the beach on our block, Beach 128 Street. I was so happy to see an American flag flying from it the very next day.

I just received a flyer in my mailbox stating that the American Flag that is FINALLY back on our beach block is in jeopardy of being removed and thrown in a NYC dump. I’m not sure why this is an issue and if this is an issue only for the beach block of Beach 128 Street. I see thousands of flags flying in our fine neighborhood. There is tons of support for our country and our troops serving, as well as the troops who have come home, especially the Wounded Warriors. Every beach block in Belle Harbor and Rockaway has had a flag EXCEPT for Beach 128 Street. I was told a few years ago that it was removed because of the noise the ropes and holders make in the wind that disturbs neighbors near the flagpole. When someone finally took the time to get a petition signed to have a new flagpole erected, my husband suggested the plastic or rubber holders so that the noise would not be a problem. They are on the new flagpole.

After all that has gone on in this nation, the few that reject the flag should NOT be pacified. Because of the freedoms provided in this great nation, these people can choose to ignore the flag. The fact that this is an issue is ludicrous. We are One Nation under God. If you don’t want those rights, there are many other countries which would be happy to have you. Maybe they should go off to Iraq or Afghanistan and see how they like it there. Pacifying these people who are so ungrateful to their nation is making our nation weak. I’m calling on ALL Rockaway residents to join in this fight. Please contact Eric Ulrich’s office or his Deputy Chief of Staff, Ciara Grace Donley at cdonley@council.nyc.gov. We need to raise our voices.

If the flag is removed from Beach 128 Street in Belle Harbor, we should all be ashamed.
