Scala For Congress In Democratic Primary
The Wave tradition is to not endorse a candidate in primary elections, but we are breaking that tradition this year because we strongly believe that the present Congressman, Gregory Meeks, has to be moved out of office for the good of the Rockaway community and because we believe that Mike Scala, a young man with good ideas, is the person to replace him. Why should Meeks be turned out of office? Let us count the ways. Just recently, one of his major fundraisers and a man who often paid the way for Meeks and his wife to travel to warmer climes, Allen Stanford, was sentenced to 110 years in a Ponzi scheme that bankrupted his investors. Then, there is a bill that recently passed the House Financial Services Committee, on which Meeks is a ranking Democratic member, that would amend the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act to adjust the date on which consolidated assets are determined, a bill which will benefit the Emigrant Savings Bank, an organization that has reportedly given Meeks lots of campaign finance money. Add that to the fact that the House Ethics Committee has already found that there is cause to censure him from a “loan” he took for a Queens businessman that was not really a loan, but an illegal contribution. We also have Meeks’ New Directions in Community Empowerment, which got lots of money meant for public consumption on the peninsula and disappeared into the night, along with the money raised for Katrina victims who had moved to New York City. That should have been enough to discredit Meeks to his constituents, but he has been Teflon in past elections. This is the time, however, for him to go. Vote for Scala in the June 26 Primary.
