LIPA Pole Collapses On Heyson Road

An electrical pole, located between Beach 14 and Beach 15 Streets fell across Heyson Road in Far Rockaway early Wednesday evening, after a transformer blew and set the pole on fire.

One resident who lives across from the scene said that at approximately 5:33 p.m. she heard a booming sound and felt giant vibrations, like something huge had crashed. She added that less than 30 seconds to a minute later she heard the sound of sirens approaching the area.

A small fire burned as fire fighters waited for LIPA crews to arrive on the scene at approximately 6 p.m. As the electrical crews worked to turn off the electricity several loud pops resulted in more intense flames, which were put out by the FDNY at approximately 6:30 p.m..

Electricity was turned off on Heyson Road to Beach 15 Street.

Officials reported no injuries

There was no indication as to when the pole would be removed and cars would be allowed to travel on the street once again. Photos by Miriam Rosenberg.
