These signs will be placed near the targeted schools. These signs will be placed near the targeted schools. Thanks to the Department of Environmental Protection, some Rockaway kids will breathe more freely, at least for the next month.

In honor of Asthma Awareness Month, the DEP will monitor idling automobiles at a number of schools around the city, including PS 43 on Beach 29 Street and PS 104 on Mott Avenue in Bayswater.

Agency inspectors will be on scene at those schools this month to monitor vehicles around the schools and make sure that no car idles for more than three minutes.

The drivers of cars that idle longer than three minutes will be given a $350 fine for the first infraction.

The program is part of the DEP’s “Turn It Off” program which addresses the financial, environmental and health impacts of idling automobiles.
