Rockaway Little League’s baseball teams will jockey for playoff position over the next 10 days as the regular season winds down. Meanwhile, the Minor Girls and Major Girls softball divisions will warm up for the post-season with the President’s Cup tournament today.

The President’s Cup is a round-robin tournament with four-inning games. The name of the winning team in each division will be etched on a plaque in the clubhouse. All Minor Girls and Major Girls teams will participate in a pizza party before the championship games. Many of the girls will be sporting their pink Clare Socks to support the Crush Cancer Fund.

While there are close pennant races in several divisions, none is tighter than Pee Wee Seniors. The Servpro Dodgers are undefeated with one tie at 7-0-1 but the Ram Title Orioles, Conte’s Carpets & Flooring A’s and Henry Myers Plumbing & Heating Jays are each within two games of the lead. First place will likely be decided on the last day of the season.

The Jays had an up-and-down week, topping the Ridgewood Savings Bank Cardinals but falling to the Belle Harbor Yacht Club Pirates. Colin Byrne struck the big blows in the 12-5 win over the Cardinals, going 3-for-3 with two triples. Charlie Smith, Matt Sweeney and Kevin Dougherty had two RBIs each. Ronan Mullally was also solid at the plate.

Pitchers Brendan Byrne and James Mangan benefitted from the offensive output and were backed by the fine fielding of Chris Light. Light also put in a strong mound performance against the Pirates, but playing with only eight players, the Jays could not withstand the Bucs onslaught.

The Jays mounted a strong comeback, scoring eight runs in the final two innings, but lost 17-11. T.J. Mahoney knocked in four runs.

Ronan Mullally had another good day at the plate. Charlie Smith was sharp in the field.

The Pee Wee Senior playoff will begin on June 21 with the Ocean Conference play-in game. All competitive divisions are scheduled to wrap up the playoffs on Super Saturday (June 30). Five championship games are slated for that morning. Diamond Dust: Rockaway Little League’s annual trip to the Cyclones will be June 29. Every person will receive a free Cyclones cap. Kids can go on the field before the game. There will be fireworks after the game. Tickets are $17 each. Contact Richie Mills for tickets (917-670-7181 or sabsrn@verizon.net).
