Blessed Trinity Takes To The Road

By Sean Padraic McCarthy-Coyne (age 13)

On a dismal early Saturday morning, the second-third grade baseball team took to the road to face an undefeated Our Lady of Hope. The last time the two teams met, Our Lady of Hope came away with a 5-0 victory. The boys hoped for a different game, and different it was to be.

Eddie Coyne took the mound for Blessed Trinity and quickly found himself in trouble. Apparently the long ride and early morning hour of the game had the boys not quite awake. The team committed three errors in the first inning, and a few mental mistakes, which allowed Our Lady of Hope to score four unearned runs.

The boys woke up and battled back in the second inning. Hot hitting Brian Yorke led the inning off with a single. Bart Mahoney followed with a single, and a walk to Owen Ryan loaded the bases. Jack Ryan got an RBI the hard way, by getting hit by a pitch. Billy Hartman followed with another RBI by being walked, and suddenly the boys were back in the game 4-2.

Blessed Trinity was on the attack, and threatened again in the top of the third inning. Eddie Coyne led off with a walk, following an outstanding defensive play by the Our Lady of Hope shortstop; Celentano singled moving Coyne to third. Brian Yorke came to bat, looking to continue his hitting streak and drive in the tying runs. “BY” swung and hit a line drive to an infielder, who doubled off Celentano at first base to end the rally.

Our Lady of Hope struck back in the third inning with a pair of unearned runs off Eddie Coyne. With the bases loaded, Coyne (7 strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings) was replaced by Bart Mahoney (no runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief), who struck out his first batter, to get Blessed Trinity out of the jam, with no further runs, and the score now 6-2.

Blessed Trinity rallied once again in the top of fifth inning. Patrick Kelly led the inning off by being hit by a pitch. Brain Duggan followed with a walk, and Eddie Coyne moved the runners over to second and third with a ground out. Bart Mahoney worked out a walk and the bases were loaded for Brian “BY” Yorke, who delivered big time with a two out double to left center. Two runs scored, making the score 6-4, but that is where it would end as the rally fell short.

Blessed Trinity went down quietly in the sixth inning. The boys battled hard, and threw a scare into the undefeated Our Lady of Hope, but came up short 6- 4. The coaches and parents who came out on an early dank Saturday morning to watch these young boys play were proud of their effort.

Next game up for the boys is this Saturday, June 9 at home. The team will be celebrating their first season of CYO baseball with a pre-game party at the Sugar Bowl at 1 p.m., followed by their last home game of the year at Breezy Point at 3:30 p.m. Come out and cheer the boys on, as they complete their first season of representing our community and CYO baseball.
