RAA Puts the Millenials on Display in June: A generation born after disco dived and hip-hop and the new wave found their way into the culture; a generation of babies born into Reaganomics, the AIDS crisis; the first generation to find the Internet, wireless communication and social media a natural state of being. Their perspective on education, art, communication and each other is like no other before them. RAA taps the talents and the viewpoints of this generation born in the ’80s and ’90s in the multimedia invitational exhibit, “Mille-nnials”; the first RAA exhibit to showcase up and coming artists under the age of 30. A few of the artists have come up as junior, then senior counselors in kidsmART, some in school at places like F.I.T and S.U.V. Says Education Direc-tor Christine Mullally, “I’m hoping this becomes a groundbreaking exhibit that continues in years to come, where we open the door for young talent.” Exhibi-tion dates are June 9-June 29, in sTudio 6 Gallery, Rockaway Center for the Arts in Fort Tilden. Opening reception is Sunday, June 10, 6-9 p.m. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday, 12-4 p.m. and by appointment.

RAA’s next general meeting is this Monday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. in sTudio 7 Gallery, Rockaway Center for the Arts, Fort Tilden. Guest presenter will be author/Wave columnist/community activist Vivian Rattay Carter discussing her book, “Images of America: Rockaway Beach,” a collection of more than 200 previously unpublished photos documenting the early social history of the Hammels, Holland and Seaside sections of the peninsula, which has been released to local stores and national online retailers. In Carter’s words, “This book celebrates achievements in a beloved American community of another time and place, and was written and produced completely on American soil.” She also suggests that you, “Buy your copy soon!” Sounds like a good idea.

The kidsmART after-school program closed its fourteenth season on Wednesday, May 16. To celebrate another great year, parents were invited to join their children and the kidsmART instructors at an open house on Tuesday, May 15. Instructors invited parents to participate in many of the engaging and creative activities that their children have taken part in throughout the year. Painting and drawing were a big hit as were playing games and just having a great afternoon.

This year, kidsmART added many new programs to our existing curriculum. National Park Service Ranger John Daskalakis worked with RAA Instructor Tara Scannell to bring hands on “Nature in the Park” which included lessons in weather forcasting, animal tracking and habitats, bird identification, mapping and more. Children enjoyed a “Reader of the Month” competition, reading leveled books from the kidsmART library. Torti, Facilitator Jo Anne Ellis’ 126-year-old tortoise visited the program and children created a question and answer book filled with Torti-facts. We ended the year with a Flower Power fundraising effort. kidsmART parents purchased more than 50 plants that will help us to beautify Building T-149. RAA CONTACT INFO:
