Speed Bump Surprise

Dear Editor,

Just when you thought DOT couldn’t get any stupider, they surprise you with speed bumps on SFP.

It’s obvious that someone at that agency has it in for Rockaway. I’m all for safety but DOT should be trying to figure out how to get us from point A to point B faster, not slower. Getting from the west end to the east end and back is an exercise in futility that has become so horrible it’s almost funny. The roads that have not yet been ”demapped” have been reduced to one lane cow paths with mis-timed, out of synch or completely unnecessary traffic lights.

Add to that construction detours and the ever-present potholes and sink holes and you’ve got a long and frustrating ride by any measure. DOT even managed to take a good idea like the new traffic circle at Beach 74 Street and screw it up with the addition of unnecessary stop signs. It’s clear that they really have no idea what they’re doing.

Apparently all those challenges were not enough to discourage Rockaway’s tormented but resilient drivers.

Shore Front Parkway, once a smooth, two lane ribbon of concrete designed to move cars briskly and safely along the waterfront has been decimated with unnecessary traffic lights, the elimination of a complete lane and now the latest insult, suspension breaking, accident causing speed bumps. What’s next, spikes in the road?

Who is making these horrible deci- sions that we are all forced to live with? Whether it’s our elected officials, misguided community groups or the drones at DOT, heads should roll. When are we going to rise up as a community and say enough is enough?
