RAA And DSSM Team Up To Honor Moms
The essence of a Mother has been described in many ways. Seniors from DSSM Neponsit Adult Day Health Care located at 230 Beach 102 Street in Rockaway Park and members from the Rockaway Artists Alliance Writers Group presented a diverse Creative Arts program to honor all Mothers.
The registrants performed in an original short skit, “Can’t Forget Mama,” written by the center’s registrant Mary Overstreet. The center’s soloist, registrant Lenny Factor, sang famous songs “Mama,” “My Yiddishe Mama” and “I’ll Always Love My Mama.”
The RAA Writers Group’s talented poet and painter Martha Killian exhibited her paintings “Where Eagles Soar” and “Edge of the Forest” and recited a poem inspired by her paintings. In addition, she read a short story about “Mother Nature.” The RAA Writers Group organizer, Dan Guarino, read a poem, “Mothers Dear,” written by Maureen Mc Nelis and read other poems including “Ode to Rockaway,” “Cicadas” and “Saturday Afternoon,” written by member Mary Najeddine. It was a real treat to hear Suzanne McCrory play classical music on the center’s piano. Guarino encouraged the seniors to sing along with familiar tunes from days gone by and a new member of the group, Elgin Bolling, recited original short stories “O Seagulls and Offal Matters” written by Elizabeth Guarino and his own short stories “Girls Always Past Me By,” “Empty Nest,” “After the Anointing” and “They That Dwell.”
This collaborative literary performance with the seniors and volunteers from the local community was worth more than a million words.
