First we launched this column in New York’s oldest weekly. Then we found ourselves on CBS Radio and then on New Zealand’s highest rated TV show talking about ideas. Seems people from around the world like to talk ideas. Oh, we also made an appearance at kidsmART, the great afterschool program run by the Rockaway Artists Alliance in Fort Tilden. We got some great ideas from those creative kids. And we’ve started a podcast. If you google “Ideas Wanted podcast” you’ll find us. And who knows what’s next, because one idea always leads to another.
Once again, the idea is, we collect ideas and then turn around and share them.
Recently we got an idea in an email from South Carolina. A former Rockaway resident, Peggy, says there should be more than The Wave’s Looking Back column:
Since I will be turning 70 I would love to see an article or something from the archives once in a while. My whole family grew up in Neponsit and we all went to St. Francis de Sales during the long era of the CYO summer shows. I subscribe to The Wave from South Carolina just to keep up every once in a while. It’s always been a great place to live and bring up kids. It still looks the same!! — Peggy
Allow muni-metered parking along the South side of Shore Front Parkway that was taken away when they reduced the road to one lane with a bike lane. The eastbound road is easily wide enough to accommodate the parking lane, the bike lane and one lane of traffic. The important catch. Sell long term parking permits. This is already done in some DOT managed muni lots. This will allow Dayton residents to park their cars there if they are willing to pay the price. – Jay, Rockaway Beach
Create an Air & Space Museum at Floyd Bennett Field. It is already an historic site and a national park, a Smithsonian sponsored museum is a natural fit; the hangars are already there and Aviator has proved they can be economically renovated, there is plenty of area for parking and expansion, runways and taxiways already exist for displays, airplanes can actually still be flown in and out on special occasions, the location is easily accessible to a major highway (Belt Parkway). – Sam, Rockaway Park
A kayak and long board rental business should open along the bay around Beach Channel and Beach 87 Street. The idea is to get people on the bay! It’s a lost opportunity for this community. – Kelly, Belle Harbor
Can I give an idea that has nothing to do with Rockaway? [of course!] How about toothbrushes with replaceable bristles. Toothbrushes could be like razors with disposable heads. You can change and keep your bristles fresh and not have to buy new toothbrushes. And sometimes your gums are sore so you need a softer bristle, here’s the answer! — Terry, Rockaway
