RAA announces its first-ever floral arrangement class to be held on the closing weekend of “Spring Into Flowers.” Join us on Saturday, May 26 in sTudio 7 as we welcome guest instructor Danielle, of Dan-ielle’s Rockaway Florist. This 90-minute hands-on class will highlight the key aspects of arrangements: colors, hues, flower selection, and composition. All supplies and materials are included in the cost of tuition. Students maytake home their creations. All levels of skill are welcome. Spaces are limited. A $30 deposit is required to reserve your space. Space is limited. Please contact us at info@raa116.org with questions.

“Checkmate!” and “Spring Into Flowers” run through May 27. The drama, dynamics and color of a venerable, yet always current and exciting game; the many aspects of the ever-changing views and varieties of the floral world. This is also the final weekend of the chess tournament in sTudio 6. RAA welcomes players of all ages and skill levels. Teams can play. For each round, the winner of each round plays the next round. At the end the winners of each team have a playoff to win prizes.

There is an extraordinary “Chess Installation” by Chris Preston in “Checkmate!” A chess board fit for giants lies on the floor, populated by equally over-sized mixed media (primarily papier maché) chess pieces, one more original and wonderful than the next. One side has its black and white ‘newspaper underwear’ showing; the other side’s combatants have been painted in geometric harlequin-like de-signs and colors. Preston’s ‘old buddies,’ two mixed media gents who have looked over sTudio 7 for years, sit in the roles of the players. Fun and brilliantly executed. Bravo Chris! Dan Guarino’s photographs in “Checkmate!” take the drama inherent in chess and turn it into theater. In “Spring Into Flowers,” there are also many pleasures. MaryAnn McEvoy has fabricated a quilt hanging, “The Flowering Can,” that is beautiful, fresh, imaginative, breathing with color; it brings the season into the home with textile art. Ludmila Vaynberg’s exquisite pastel and three oil paintings find both the power and delicacy of their subjects.

Call to Artists: “5 Boros” RAA invites artists to seek out the unexpected, surprising pockets of New York City and its five vibrant boroughs through painting, mixed media, sculpture, photography, watercolor, music, the written word and more. Whether taking the view from a Rockaway sand castle or across from a Manhattan steel skyscraper, “5 Boros” seeks to take gallery-goers into our unique corner of the world in new and interesting ways; and reveal the hidden treasures of its neighborhoods, streets, buildings, beaches, people and places. “5 Boros” is open to all media. Deadline for submission of entries: June 7, 2012. Exhibition dates: June 23-August 5, 2012.

There will be a Salon Art Show (RAA members only) occurring at the same time. Contact RAA for details.
