Arson Arrest Under Rockaway Freeway

This 2005 Chevy Avalanche was totaled in the fire. This 2005 Chevy Avalanche was totaled in the fire. A Brooklyn man was arrested this week after he allegedly broke into one car and set fire to another under the Rockaway Freeway near Beach 80 Street on Tuesday morning May 15.

According to court papers the owner of a Chrysler 300 approached his car at around 4:15 a.m. and found his passenger side front window had been broken and several personal items were missing from his glove compartment.

He noticed the arrested man, Yussel Berrios, 28, across the street standing on the running board of a 2005 Chevy Avalanche.

When Berrios was approached by the owner of the Chrysler 300 he fled. Seconds later the Avalanche erupted into flames, court records show.

According to fire officials, the fire was started with a book of matches that were dropped near the driver’s seat of the truck.

Berrios was charged with Arson, criminal mischief and petit larceny. He was held at Queens Criminal Court on $50,000 bail. His next court date is May 29.
