Michael Reinhardt and Michael Kololyan Michael Reinhardt and Michael Kololyan It’s the time of year when scores of new college graduates leave their campuses and begin to pound the pavement looking for work. Many head into the city by bus, train or car in search of a job. But three local grads have a different idea. They’re heading into the ocean instead.

Rockaway Beach lifeguards and childhood friends Michael Reinhardt, Michael Kololyan and Daniel Kestenbaum are sharing their passion for surfing by taking the plunge into the business world by opening Locals Surf School this season here in Rockaway Beach.

Located on Beach 67 Street, these entrepreneurs are combining their business degrees, surfing instruction experience and love of the water in the hope of bringing surfing and good times to all.

Born and raised in Rockaway, these three surfing fanatics have been in the water for as long as they can remember. Collectively they’ve travelled up and down the east and west coasts, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Mexico in search of the perfect ride. Koloyan is a former competitive surfer and all three have surf instructor experience.

For those coming down from the city or suburbs for the day, owners Reinhardt and Koloyan introduce students to the burgeoning Rockaway neighborhood.

“It’s what separates our school from the others. We are born and raised here and have surfed here all our lives. We know the community better than anyone,” says Kololyan.

So if you need surfing supplies or want to check out the hippest fish tacos on the beach after your lesson, Locals will help.

Locals Surf School is open 7 days per week on Beach 67 Street. Single and group lessons are available. Generally, a two hour group lesson is the best first step for those who are starting out. Students can expect to learn fundamentals, safety precautions and ride a few waves. All three instructors are CPR certified.

So for those considering surfing for the first time, or experienced surfers looking to learn new tricks, Locals Surf School is now open and ready for business. The Locals are ready to teach, one wave at a time.
