St.Virgilius/St. Camillus Win
The BCAC St. Virgilius/St. Camillus Bantam Shamrocks baseball team opened up the season April 14 by defeating St. Stan’s 13-1 in 5 innings (Mercy Rule). Timmy McCabe got the start and the win, pitching four strong innings, allowing only one run and striking out 9.
The offense was led by Anthony Ambrosino (2-2, 3B, 2B, 4 RBIs) and Paddy Minihane (3-3, 3 runs, 2 RBIs), followed by Tristen Dougherty (1-1, 2 runs, 4 SB), Charlie Bostwick (1-2, 2 runs, RBI), Mike Reardon (1-3, 2 SB), Liam Malsy (1-3, R, 5 SB) and Mike O’Reilly (1-3, R, SB). Gilberto Lopez and Shane Krzyanowski were solid in the outfield. Nick Font had a pinch hit RBI.
The Bantam Shamrocks held on for a 7-6 victory vs. Our Lady of Hope on April 21. Starting pitcher Anthony Ambrosino, got the win and started the game striking out five batters. He made a key defensive play in the first inning, freezing the runner at third and starting a 1-3-2 inning ending double play as Mike O’Reilly threw a bullet to catcher Nick Font.
Offensively, Font hit his first home run of the season ,which turned out to be the game winner (2-3, HR, 2 RBIs). Other hitting stars included: Mike O’Reilly (2-3, 2 RBIs), Liam Malsy (3-3. R, 3 SB), Tristen Dougherty (2 BB, 2R, 2 SB), Anthony Ambrosino (2-3, R, RBI), Mike Reardon (1-2, R) and Paddy Minihane, who went 2-3 with three stolen bases.
The Shamrocks had a 6-5 lead when Michael O’Reilly came on in relief to shut down OLH.
O’Reilly struck out nine, giving up only 1 run and earned the game ball, he also had several key defensive plays to seal the victory. Jose Santana stole his first base of the season, also contributing defensively were Gilberto Lopez, Jarrett Johnson and Cory Walker.
St. Virgillius/St. Camillus went on to defeatSt.Matthias10-5ina5inning ballgame held on April 22. Font started the game and got his first win of the season by pitching four innings, striking out seven batters.
Liam Malsy got the save pitching a solid fifth inning. The hitting stars for St. Virgilius were: Jose Santana (BB, R), Johnson (2 BB, 2R), Reardon (1-1, BB, R), O’Reilly (1R, SB), Nick Font (1-1, 2B), Dougherty (2 BB, 2R, 4SB), and Malsy (1-2, 2R, 5 SB), Lopez (BB) and Cory Walker (BB).
Bostwick was outstanding behind the plate and Dougherty (CF), Reardon (2B), Minihane (3B) and Malsy (SS) were also solid defensively.
