Underage Drinking In Breezy Point

Dear Editor,

The incident that occurred on May 5 at the Reyes family home is not the first and won’t be the last arrest in Breezy Point for underage drinking.

I know of at least two incidents where parents were arrested for underage drinking in Breezy Point in the past. Of course, the details never made headlines due to the secrecy of the cooperative.

We live in a private community where adult and underage drinking are rampant. I know of parents who had to send their teenage children away to drug alcohol programs out-ofstate and a young teenage girl 17 years old who lives two blocks from the Reyes family has been in rehab for a year. These teens are becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol at a very young age. Underage drinking is also tolerated in the pubs in Breezy Point – The Blarney, The Sugar Bowl and the Bay House as well as Jameson’s on Beach 129 Street.

Fake I.D.s are presented at all these establishments from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The Breezy Point Coop sweeps everything under the rug, looks the other way and does not want to publicly own up to the problems within the community. We wake up many mornings to beer cans and liquor bottles strewn all over the beach, deck furniture missing … used for beach parties. Summer homes are broken into explicitly for teenage drug and alcohol use. Of course, the problems are not discussed publicly, the family receives a fine and a warning and the parties continue.

The community needs a wake-up call and hopefully this was it. There have been several drug overdose deaths as well of teenagers whose parents reside in Breezy Point. When will these adults wake-up? How many teens must die before we realize we have a big problem on our hands? Also, a body washed up on Breezy shores about a month ago.

This was kept very quiet, the body was removed by the NYPD and we never heard a word about it. There was mention of a stalker following children on their way home. Again, no public statements made to the community by the Breezy Point Coop. It’s time to speak up and become aware of what is happening in this community. If you see something, say something … you may save a life!

I must remain anonymous due to the harassment I would endure by the Coop if I signed this. NAME WITHHELD UPON EQUEST
