RWA Sponsors Earth Day Celebration

Surfrider’s Bag Monster. Surfrider’s Bag Monster. Last week more than 400 people showed up to the 6th Annual Earth Day Rockaway event hosted by Rockaway Waterfront Alliance and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. Each year this event grows in size with various organizations from throughout NYC taking part in hosting free activities for kids to learn more about the environment.

Special thanks to all those who participated including more than 50 local students from PS105, Kappa VI and Scholars’ Academy who volunteered to help with the day’s event.

The NYC Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation showed up with their bag monster, to protest excessive use of plastic bags. Many of these bags end up on our beaches and contribute to pollution in our oceans and beaches.

National Grid also used the event to kick off an energy efficiency program with RWA’s Shore Corps Youth Intern Program which will employ local youth in programming this summer leading fun, educational workshops and projects for kids and families focused on energy conservation.

The day would not have been possible without support from sponsors: Arverne by the Sea, Next Era Energy Resources, National Grid, Virgin America Airways, Port Authority NY/ NJ and NYC DOT Bike Safety.
