Of Chess, Flowers And Books
Commentary by Susan Hartenstein

Gorgan Bloom,” pencil on Bristol board, by Carolina Moya. One of the artworks in “Spring Into Flowers.” Gorgan Bloom,” pencil on Bristol board, by Carolina Moya. One of the artworks in “Spring Into Flowers.” With apologies to RAA president, Anthony Curcio. I spelled Tony’s name incorrectly a couple of weeks ago. So sorry.

Chess has never been so fascinating! Sunday, May 13 at 1 p.m. in sTudio 6, chess expert Michael P. Kusen presents “Welcome To the Game of Chess, as part of RAA’s exhibit, “Checkmate!” The dynamics, drama and personalities of the game; its importance as a means of learning, mental discipline and problem solving. Kusen has taught chess for 25 years, written books and a widely used teaching curriculum.

To learn more about him: www.chessforteachers.com. As a special bonus – free chess books.

Kusen has created two surprising, exciting interactive artworks based on chess, revealing the fascinating mind of the artist and a fascinating game. “The artist makes the basic form and the viewer can move it around,” says Kusen of his work.

Of course, in the sly “Impossible Chessboard,” both the board and the pieces are ‘impossible.’ See why for yourself. “Checkmate!” and “Spring Into Flowers” run through May 27. A chess tournament will be played through May 27 and the champ will receive a prize.

Bernie Feuer will be presenting his multi-media gig, “The Story of Jacob Riis,” at Peninsula Library, 95-25 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, on Saturday, May 12. Feuer’s co-star will be Dan Guarino as Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt.

Guest presenter at RAA’s next general meeting will be author/artist/filmmaker Robert Sarnoff, discussing, reading excerpts from and signing his two most recent books. “got a minute? humorous vacation tales and tips” is filled with Sarnoff’s paintings, illustrations, collages and commentary created during his many years of travel.

A chapter, “You Got To Ring Them Bells” is a love-letter to Rockaway complete with beach scenes, bridges, children at play, lifeguards ...

“AFTER THE FALL - 9/11/11 (A Decade of War)” is filled with some 200 of his editorial cartoons culled from almost 500 created for The Wave during these ten years. The first few pages reflect Rockaway’s reactions. Notations and observations refresh the context of these political illustrations.
