Rockaway Teen Challenge Report

After seven weeks, the Rockaway Teen Challenge 19 and under basketball regular season has concluded with one team undefeated.

Da Bizness hopes to avenge their only defeat, handed to them by Team Deuce, coached by Isaac Parsee and Moe. The two teams meet again on Saturday, May 12 at 4 p.m. as they vie for the gold medal.

In a gritty elimination match between Hammel and PAL at Goldie Maple Academy, Hammel won the opportunity to face Redfern in the championship. Redfern was the victor in their previous meeting.

A Stop, Question, and Frisk workshop offering will be presented by attorney Jacques Leandre and retired Correction Officer Lorenzo Steele. This session will be open to the community. Organizers ask you to tell some friends and come, learn your rights and the proper way to successfully handle a stop, question, and frisk encounter with the police. Workshop begins at 1:30 p.m. at Peninsula Preparatory Academy, 111-11 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Championship games will begin at 3 p.m.

Chess tournament orientation is on Tuesday, May 22 at 4 p.m., at the Teen Library, 2002 Cornaga Avenue. Robert S., Teen Library, Ted Michael, Church of God Christian Academy, and Ken Layne, NYCHA Beach 41 Street Houses, will be the Judge/Coach Mentors. Call 718-471-2573 or walk in. It’s not too late to register!

Handball is on the horizon, with a tournament scheduled to begin in June. Please contact John at 516-509- 8957. Coach Mentors John Cori and Ron Palmer are recruiting Rockaway’s best, from east to west! Stay tuned for future announcements. www.rockaway teenchallenge.com
