Rockaway Beach Volleyball Ramps Up For Opening Day
The one and only Rockaway Beach Volleyball League pre-season meeting was held on Wednesday, April 18, at the Blackwater and team captains showed up in droves. The Blackwater surprised everyone with a spread of food that kept the hungry throngs quite satisfied throughout the evening.
They may have started a new league tradition. Who can ever argue with baked ziti and chili? Great job. A few rules and regulations were discussed briefly and the importance of sportsmanship toward players, referees and officials was stressed. Then the majority of time was spent collecting team rosters, league fees and uniform orders. That’s when the hard work began for the RBVL committee.
Last year, no teams from the waiting list were admitted to the league but this year four made it in. The league is still striving to make things run smoothly with the new, very large population of players. More equipment must be purchased; more referees have to be found; nets will have to be set up much further down on the beach.
All the new players assured President Patty Moule that they would do whatever it took to help the season run smoothly. They all volunteered in advance to help in any way that was needed on and off the beach. And it worked in 2011. That same spirit will be needed in 2012 from everyone as well. Your league has become the place to be during the summer in Rockaway. Remember that has happened primarily because of great camaraderie and sportsmanship more than great bumps, sets and spikes, although they are nice, too.
If you are not on a team and you are looking to play, you should make a friend, date a current player or maybe even think about marrying into the league. The 2012 season will feature 9 different divisions with varying levels of skill. Look for 2011 champs, Freedhand’s, Dig This, Wharf Rats, Miley Home Improvement Posse, ROC FAM, Breakaways, Sands Point PT, White Horse Tavern Beach Posse and the Rockaway Breakers to return and defend their titles with the 2011 runners-up Sugar Bowl, Bryan’s Auto Accelerators, the Mighty Boosh, Healy’s Rat Pack, U Got Served, Borders Surf Shop, Sal’s Auto Sandstorm, Bungalow Baranhas and the Social Yachties nipping at their heels. Each season, some teams move up, some teams move down and many teams stay in the same divisions. The league goal is to have as many close games and division races as possible. No one likes losing 3-21 or winning 21-2 (well maybe one or two people like this) but everyone likes playing five tight games each Wednesday.
In the next week or two, the new 2012 divisional set-ups will be listed here in the Wave. Start planning your line-ups and strategies (Rumor has it that the Rockaway Breakers were so dominant last summer that they will be the first team in the RBVL to moveup five divisions).
This year, 9 divisions of different playing levels will be fielded with a record-setting 74 teams.
The start of the season is coming soon, so if you have any questions ,please call Patty Moule on her cell phone at 917-613-0908. Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. See you on the beach on May 25!
