RWA Hosts Rockspot Bike Tour

Participants of the tour with NYC Parks officials. Participants of the tour with NYC Parks officials. Last week RWA hosted the first Rockspot Bike Tour of the season. Don Riepe, director of the American Littoral Society, led the tour which explored the eastern end of the Rockaway Peninsula. The Urban Park Rangers also joined the group to give an interpretive walk through the Piping Plover Sanctuary to discuss preparation for the upcoming nesting season.

The bike tours are being led each month by RWA to encourage the public to explore the natural shoreline of the Rockaways and take part in an initiative to promote biking and outdoor recreation to reduce the high risk of diabetes, obesity and asthma. The tours are free and bikes are available to use for the tours.

The next tour will be led on Saturday, May 5 at 3 p.m., departing from Firehouse 59 at 58-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. This tour will explore the eastern end of the Peninsula with special focus on the Far Rockaway bungalow community. Advanced registration required for those needing bikes.
