Lady Dolphins Make Turnaround
Beach Channel/Channel View softball coach Dominic Stanco continues to be impressed with his team on a daily basis. After coming off a 1-11 campaign last year, the Lady Dolphins have turned their fortunes around in 2012 with an entirely new roster.
Beach Channel have put themselves in contention for a playoff spot in the Queens BII division with a 6-3 record at press time.
“We’ve been playing good teams and we’re getting better. And teams on our level, we are just playing better, Stanco said. “It’s awesome to see how well they have improved from day one. They know when to steal, tag up, stay on the base, ground balls, force plays.”
Starting pitcher Stephanie Andino, who has recorded all of their wins, and sister Samantha were the only two to come back. Senior infielder Cindy Rodriguez leads the team in batting average at .609 and driven in 17 RBI in her first year on the squad. Khadijah Reece Boyce is hitting .381. Freshmen Gabriela Martinez is currently hitting .583 with 18 stolen bases, and Kayleigh Hurley has driven in 18 runs.
Beach Channel was down 11 runs to Scholars Academy (6-1 record) before scoring nine runs in the top of the second inning. That game on April 19 was suspended and will be resumed today.
