JASA Seniors Get Feuer History Lesson
Rockaway historian Bernie Feuer brought his story of Jamaica Bay show to the senior citizens of the JASA Rockaway Park Senior Citizens’ Club on Thursday April 19. Twenty-eight seniors enjoyed the show. They learned about the Native Americans who inhabited the shores of Jamaica Bay and about the first settlers. They learned about the first development and the changes in the area that came with the coming of the Jamaica Bay railroad trestle and the Prohibition period.
They also learned of the destruction of the homes on the islands of Jamaica Bay when the ‘Rockaway villain,’ as some called Robert Moses, wanted to establish the first City wildlife refuge in the Bay and the ecological problems facing our unique and beautiful Bay today.
