Local Cops Face‘Drano Bombs’
Cops in Far Rockaway have been targeted for an attack with “Drano Bombs,” citywide police sources say.
The NYPD issued an alert late last week warning patrol officers about the unusual weapon. That alert said that the Drano Bombs are also called bottle bombs and are “exploded by readily mixing available household items in plastic containers.”
Police sources said that while the alert went to all the precincts in the city, officials are showing the greatest concern for Rockaway.
Intelligence sources say that gang members in the Rockaways have been talking about using the bombs, throwing them at patrol officers or at police cars on patrol.
“It’s not terrorism,” one official source told reporters, “it’s just plain criminals.”
He added that the alert is just a precaution and that none of the bombs have been seen on the street.
“These things can be dangerous,” the source added.
“We don’t know if they are tied to any particular recent police activity or if somebody just saw them on the web or some place like that and spread the word.”
Drano Bombs are made with drain or toilet cleaner that contains hydrochloric acid and can cause chemical burns to the skin or even blindness, sources say.
