Rockaway Outdoors/Tales From The Wheelhouse
For the moment the ocean east and south, Long Beach and New Jersey, in that order, seem to have the upper hand in the striped bass wars. Apparently there’s a big body of bait herring, bunker and such with an equally big body of bass in the mix. Along with them some bluefish, too, putting on the feedbag.
Jamaica Bay is off its mark as of this writing, but that could change in one cast. Usually the bay, at least the back bay, is a week or two behind the ocean runners. However, on Tuesday, Lyle and his buddies scratched out a few fish on live bunker. It was by no means a great bite. Meanwhile the flounder and ling seem to be a sure thing for those anglers looking to put some meat on the table.
Upfront the beaches off of Rockaway around the 105 Street area saw some decent action as bass crashed through schools of baitfish earlier in the week. Those fish apparently made the move east – as noted earlier Long Beach saw some fine fishing. So for the moment it looks like, if you want a big catch the ocean’s the place. Until the next tide …
