Kosmos Athena Girls Display Strong Showing In L.I. Cup
The Kosmos’ Athena U14 girls have started off their spring season in a big way. Over the winter the team went through significant restructuring and eagerly looked forward to the spring season.
Moving up into the competitive Division 4 of the Long Island Jr. Soccer League, the team was unsure of their ability to remain competitive but four weeks into the season, the girls are in first place.
The girls started by beating the West Hempstead Firebirds 3-0 in their opening round of the Long Island Cup. The following week, the team tied the Northport/Cow Harbor Liberty 2-2 in their regular season opener. The Athena girls came back strong week 3 beating the Bohemia Bobcats 2-0 to move them to the top of their division.
Their rematch this past weekend against Northport in the second round of the Long Island Cup had a different outcome with Athena dominating 2-0. Kyla Tacopina in goal had a spectacular day, aggressively smothering all attempts on her goal. Samantha O’Brien maintained her role as the team’s goal scorer by putting one in the net after beating two defenders 1v 2 and later assisting Aleksandra Neckahuptysiowska on the second goal.
On Saturday morning, Nikh had a tough loss in their second round of the LI Cup game against New Hyde Park Jaguars. This season, the Jaguars have become their nemesis.
It was a great soccer game between two good and competitive teams. Nikh took the lead scoring the first goal followed by the Jaguars scoring two. The pressure was on, Kate McNamara fiercely attacked opponents and the ball trying to get it back into our possession as did Grace Lanzetta on the right wing. Jill McCabe, as forward, tried hard forcing the ball up the middle. Lauren Koenig and Niamh Gormley defensively played the left wing tight. The Jaguars scored the fourth goal which led Nikh to record a number of shot attempts at the goal, some unsuccessfully until one went in to make the score 4-3. Shannon Beissel eagerly attempted to punt the ball to her forward teammate, Sydney Urban, to attempt making the goal they needed to tie the game. In the last few minutes, Nikh was on top of the ball in the opponent’s box but unfortunately ran out of time, ending their game defeated, 4-3. It was a tough loss for the team.
The Kosmos’ Poseidon U10 boys team has started off their spring season with two victories and one defeat. In their first game of the season, the team kept a clean sheet playing excellent defense and goal keeping with two goals each for Thomas McGinn and Corey Rodman, winning 4-0. In the second game, the Kosmos’ lost a close contest, 2-1. The team fell behind early and battled back but was unable to find the equalizer. This was an excellent defensive game in which the Kosmos controlled possession for 75 percent of the game.
In the most recent game, the team won 5-1 with goals and assists by Dean Hanrahan, Sean Hennessy, Jason Moore, Tim McEnroe and Shawn O’Keefe. Thomas McGinn and Chris McElhinney controlled the midfield with their brilliant sweeping and attacking style. Luca D’Ambrosio, Brian McGinn and Jason Moore stopped the opponent with their superb defensive play. This is their first year of travel competition and the team is improving each week.
Sunday morning, Atalanta girls U12 went to play the third place team in their division, the Rockville Center Cardinals. With many of its players on the injury list or still on spring recess, Atalanta came out strong with a minimal number of players. The first half of the game the defense worked hard. Many of the players, new to the team, as well as the coach, tried to work together for the first time. At half time the score was 0–0.
In the second half, Jessica Buckley as a fullback kicked the ball so hard forward that it hit the top of the goal post from midfield. Katie Marquardt, although also suffering injuries, leaped on the ball and put it into the net. Atalanta scored the only goal of the game, allowing them to take home the win.
