Dr. Rosenberg At West End Temple

By Debbie Fleury

This Friday evening on April 20, Dr. Justus Rosenberg will be a special guest speaker after Shabbat services. The West End Temple will be welcoming him to speak as part of the remembrance of the holocaust for Yom HaShoah. Dr. Rosenberg, an Emeritus Professor of Language and Literature at Bard College, was raised in Europe at the time when his classmates began wearing the Hitler Youth uniforms, during World War II. He was captured, imprisoned and later escaped.

During the war he worked as part of the Varian Fry group under-ground, which ran a network that helped thousands of anti-Nazi and Jewish refugees escape Vichy, France.

Marc Chagall and Hannah Arendt were among the many artists and intellectuals who escaped Vichy. Dr. Rosenberg is the last surviving member of their group.

The West End Temple is located at 147-02 Newport Avenue. The service will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Anyone with further questions about the event is encouraged to call their office at: 718-634-0301.
